Thursday evening class, and we're sorting the top edge of Adams chisel box out.
It had been dovetailed together, corners tidied up and the next part was to line up the top surfaces to a given measurement from the base. This is where people start to worry and can lose a little confidence in their ability.
Trying to put this into words really isn't easy. So, please watch the video to get a good understanding of how I sometimes approach this sort of thing.

Only when we were concentrating on the flatness of the edge and the way the plane can remove the thinest of materials; did I remind Adam the look through the mouth of the plane and focus on the wood being planed and the shavings too.
The first tip is to look at the wood you are planing through the mouth. So you can start and stop the cut exactly where you want. Also read the highs and lows of the surface by watching where the shavings are coming through nicely and where they are not.
And have a piece of paper with plane directions clearly marked. It saves remembering which direction each is is preferable. Especially if you turn the box around.
