Making a sliding door fit perfectly in the plate holder.

My latest video [no67] takes us through the process of fitting a sliding door perfectly into the plate holder.

The panels used to make the door were slightly different sizes due to being ripped from the old staircase rail (1960s/70s modern). The one piece was full width (of the plank) and the other was the outer handrail part with 9mm radius on two edges of the same side. So I had made the door oversize in width by about 15mm and height by about 40mm. Working from glue joints to centre up the panel and getting the side panels and top and bottom panels equal. Its easier than it looks. But the process does take a little time.

We start with the width and getting the side panels equal width and fitted to the wider aperture, which then allows me to create the rebates. Then on to the height. I'd recommend watching the video as it goes through each step without skipping fast forward, like a lot of videos do.

Bruce Aitken wooden clock repair

Sometimes I get people walk into my workshop with a bit more than just a woodworking a problem. I've known the owner of this wooden clock for a number of years and have fixed a few things over that time. This time he could not get hold of the original maker. Bruce Aitken makes wonderful wooden clocks.

And so the owner has asked me to repair the pendulum weight. What happened was the cord that hangs down to the counter weight must have got caught somehow.. Well, it's all in the video here

Sometimes I'm not too happy to have to repair other makers pieces. This one is a weight for a very expensive completely wooden clock. (from £1900.00)
I'm not going to list all the things wrong with it. I've made this video of the repairs and my views are on there too.
I make things to last as many years as possible. That way I have happy customers and pieces don't come back. I'm not sure how often people take parts back to Mr Aitken but there's one less this time.

I have to say I do a pretty good job of sealing the wood after the repairs were done and then onto the finishing. Which was a little more shiny than before. But at least it won't (or really shouldn't) move from moisture again.

Thanks for stopping by. Here's the link to the video again.

All the best
