🍷 Wine Boxes to Tool Boxes

Finding Beauty and Purpose in Simple Materials

Every so often, a small project reminds me why I love this craft. This week, it was a few old wine boxes — nothing fancy, just pine crates with a bit of history in their grain. But with a little care, they’ve become plane storage boxes for my tiny workshop.

There’s something satisfying about turning something ordinary into something useful. The wine boxes already carried a story — stamped names, small dents, the smell of wood that’s lived another life. I didn’t want to hide that; just guide it a little, so it could continue being useful in a new way.

Each box now holds one or two planes, neatly divided, ready to hand. It’s a small improvement, but in a tiny shed workshop, that sort of order makes all the difference.

You can watch the whole process here:

Does your Cabinet Scraper draw Blood?

How many times have you cut yourself on your Cabinet Scrapers?

Latest video shows you how I deal with those corners and sharp edges. It's only a couple of minutes long, so head over and see if it suits you to do the same on your card scrapers 👍

Don't throw those Coffee grounds Away!! Free Fuel

Ever wondered what happens to all those leftover coffee grounds after your morning brew? Instead of throwing them away, I’ve found a way to turn waste into free fuel! ☕🔥

In this video, I’ll show you step by step how I transform coffee grounds into eco-friendly briquettes that heat my home for free. It’s simple, sustainable, and something anyone can try.

👉 Watch until the end to see the process from raw coffee waste to finished briquette — and how they burn compared to wood.

If you enjoy this kind of project, don’t forget to like 👍, subscribe, and share — it really helps the channel grow!

You’ll never throw them away again 👉

A week in the Workshop - Shed Shelving made Simple.

Lots going on in the workshop this week!

Now that the school holidays are over, it’s time to get stuck back into projects. This week includes making shelves for my shed, adjusting a bookcase, scorching a stool, showing some of my students’ work, and even finding ways to make the most out of twisted timber.

I’ve also included a throwback clip from 10 months ago, when I was given some Holly lengths (about 4ft long). These will eventually become a beautifully designed chair of my own creation.

The main theme this week, though, is tidying and organising the workspace. By making the workshop more practical and efficient, I can focus on the pieces I really want to be making.

'8 x Six' episode 2 Panels & Shelves

Welcome back to the '8 x Six' Studio.

In this episode I'm moving forward with shelving, much needed lights for the winter months.

Watch the video here

I also show how I restored the finish on an Oak Chest, that looks absolutely wonderful when it was finished and ready to go home.

I have door lock problems, and then show a rare sight of Rooks going through a type of murmuration before settling in for the night.

Lots of other things including how the Wednesday night guys are getting on with their stools.

Shed & Shelving 8 x Six Studio

I really needed to get better organised, I suppose we all do. A tidy up, throwing things out, some to charities, on Ebay & Free cycle etc.

My shed was calling out again. Things needed to move from house to shed, kitchen to garage and do on.

Well in this first episode I start some of the moving around and shelving is the order of the day.

How I set up heights, depths according to what I have lying around and other factors. The fact that the shed is already insulated helps a lot. I've really invested some time in here and it just needs a bit more lining and shelving can go ahead.

Let me know what you think in the comments under the video. That way we share knowledge, experience and ideas.

Thank you for your support

See you next week
