Boxes.. Watch this before you make a box. The good, the bad & the ugly

So many people make boxes. They are wonderful to create. You can start from scratch, repurpose or modify.

I do all three depending on the final use and who commissioned the piece, or what it final use is. If its a restaurant and for use with food, then I mostly use new wood and everything is clean and crisp.

Some of the easiest boxes to make can be made with the basic hand tools. Hand tool woodworking is the way to start. You don't have to buy loads of expensive machines that will hardly be used. Start small. Buy what you need.

Cardboard boxes can be great and useful. On the other hand look at vegetable boxes. Really flimsy side wood but the corners are strong so they can stack 10 high.

Here's a video of my thoughts on box designs.. Good, bad and very wasteful. That box the champagne came in, should have been so much better.

Hope you enjoy the video. Let me know in the comments your thoughts on Boxes.

Repairing E.C. Emmerich primus plane adjustable mouth issues

One of the reasons why these planes are so well respected is the wonderful mechanism designed by Karl Emmerich in 1952, the sole of Lignum Vitae, and the adjustable mouth.. this is a perfect combination.

The problem is that if these planes get too damp, they move around and the hidden piece of wood beneath the sole is... Beech. The worst wood for movement. So before you try to fix your plane it might pay to watch how I did mine. There are a couple of things to watch out for. The first is the threaded insert getting rusty and 'blowing' the Beech sub base apart.

watch it here

In this video I'm seeking out the problems and sorting them in the best possible way.

Sometimes called 'horned' planes. These wooden smoother planes are amazing and perfect for cabinet making.

EC Emmerich Primus Reform plane 711

Every now and then a Plane comes to surface on my alerts.

The E.C.E. Primus #711 by E.C.Emmerich Company is one that I have had my eyes on for many years.

First seen on my Woodwork teachers bench at high school. This plane has always been on 'the list'

I bought one a couple of years ago and have yet to use it. So then when one came up on an auction site I had a punt. And got it.. £40...however it wasn't quite right.. watch here

See what the connection with Karl Holtey is.

Did he see this before he started making his own planes? I think so.

Compost briquette trials

As we start thinking of later nights and enjoying the Spring sunshine. The heating is on less and the Log burner gets to heat our home on its own. In amongst warming the house up I'm doing trials on the briquettes I make out of my waste woodust and shavings.

This week I'm comparing three batches of my briquettes. Batch 1, 4 and 6. And the really interesting one for me is that no6.

You see no6 was roughly 50% Coffee grounds and 50% Wood shavings but, the mix was left for about 3 weeks I think. (I would have to check my little red book to get accurate details) And in that time the conditions were so right that it actually looked like soil. Yes it was like compost.

Anyhow please watch the video. Let me know what you think.

3 Woodworking tips. And meet my Titebond 'Fishy'

As I work on my own and then have to clear benches for evening class students. I find useful ways to improve some of the little things. Here are three things I find myself doing that you might find useful.

The first is a regular 'pain in my hands'. Pulling the lid or applicator on a Titebond bottle is not the easiest, especially when you have Arthritis. So I made my Titebond 'Fishy' a few years ago.

There are TWO other useful tips too

You can watch and listen Here

Woodworking can be amazing, from the Studios to the Projects to Art.

I hope these tips help you enjoy your woodworking.

Alexander Mathieson Brace

This is an Alexander Mathieson Beech and Rosewood plated framed brace. I've had it so long that it's just become a piece on a shelf. But can we still use these wonderful artifacts?

Maybe it's time to let it go? Let's go through it and remind ourselves just how good these braces were.. Are.

Accu-Burr.. review?

One of my evening class students has bought this tool to Sharpen his scrapers.
And I get to try it out and give my verdict.

To buy one or not?

At £45 the Accu-Burr is not a cheap tool. It's not complicated, in fact it's one of the most simple tools made. Made from Carbide it is very hard, with just three simple bevels cut into the middle.
Well, with me doing a series of videos about how to Sharpen a scraper. I started with how my old boss Barry Smith taught me to Sharpen with a screwdriver and chisel. You can watch that video Here

Now it's the turn of the latest tool to market. Matt is a keen woodworker and will open his wallet when he sees something quite 'pretty'.

How did it fair?
