Cutting Holly and other tips - And Storm Darragh

A Saturday in the workshop with a Storm Going on outside.

Matt had missed a couple of weeks, so I asked him to join me on this Saturday. 

Firstly the vice was very squeaky and I got it all wrong by mixing oil with pencil lead to lubricate it. I'm sure it'll be fine. 

Then I needed to split a Holly log. Now Holly is blooming hard to split. So that was not as quick and easy as I thought.

Bandsaw Blade Fitting - DeWalt DW739

I've built boats, cars, church furniture and all sort of things over the years. And you find out very quickly when it happens that service, restoration, replacing parts is sometimes more important than the creating of the piece. 

So you build in ways to make it work for you or the guys to build, but also make it easy for the service guy/ engineer who has to change the washing machine in the companion way on a 60 foot yacht. 

And when you're craning in a module of two compartments (one toilet and one shower) There has to be extra parts to make that work, but will probably never used again. 

Stay with me, I am getting to my point here. I was a build for manufacturing guy. The one who made things work out for everyone. 

So when someone designs a Bandsaw. The most important thing about the bandsaw HAS to be to make the blade changes quick and as simple as possible. And with that, as SAFE as possible. 

The DeWalt 739 is a tricky little bandsaw to change the blade and it really didn't have to be that way. I can see it really didn't need you to move two adjusters out of the way AND twist the blade 90°. 

But if they really had to make it that way, then the thing to do would be to make it known that it was tricky. 

The instructions were vague at least. 

As a manufacturer you want to make it easy to get that machine up and running. So my solution would be a sticker inside the top wheel door, showing the process, and more details in the instructions... Not less. 

Helping out, by not only going to the school and fitting the new blade. But by filming it so the video can be used again and again as an instructional video.

The Perfect Shaving Horse

Hello and welcome back. 

I made my Shaving Horse around 2014. And wanted it to be comfortable.
Comfort was one of my main points due to me having Arthritis at the time and I wanted to be able to sit at it all day long without being uncomfortable.

I'd already visited Ron a friend of mine who has a number of shaving horses. I'd tried his out and got some dimensions from his and the www Internet.
