Woodworking Vice Jaws Upgrade - Plywood, Cork & Neoprene cheeks

I'd left it way too long to replace these plywood cheeks on my woodworking vice. And the upgrade to Neoprene /Cork mix is brilliant.

Vice Jaws can have a tough life, so keep an eye on them and replace them before they get as bad as mine have. You can see just hiw bad my vice cheeks were in my video here

It will improve your holding, your grip and with them flush with the bench top, will help you get more accurate with all of your vice use.

Don't beat them up and damage them. Use pads inside if you think you're going to beat them up. Protect your work but also protect the things that help you create your pieces.

The Ruler Trick by David Charlesworth - Its the perfect time to try on older blades

Maybe it's time to try the ruler trick by David Charlesworth. The Ruler Trick really isn't a trick, it is a method of creating a very tiny bevel on the back of the blade, that is so tiny it doesn't affect the the plane in use. The pitting on the back of a very old Stanley plane blade has made me think, nows the time.

I've seen Rob Cosman use the Ruler Trick and he seems to be really vested in the process. Mind you he does sell the Shapton 16k stones he uses and I'm a bit of a sceptic sometimes.

I have tried The Ruler Trick once before but not to camera and on a plane I wasn't that invested in. So here goes.. Oh and I try using Tape, you'll see. I think I might be onto something with the tape.

I made a video on The Ruler Trick by David Charlesworth.

I have a storage block with no4 plane irons waiting to be swapped over in a hurry, if needed.

. 

The last one left to clean up and sharpen, was this Stanley. A reasonable clean up but.. Quite pitted where the cap iron meets the blade.

The Ruler Trick is worth trying when there is so much to come off.
