So many people make boxes. They are wonderful to create. You can start from scratch, repurpose or modify.
I do all three depending on the final use and who commissioned the piece, or what it final use is. If its a restaurant and for use with food, then I mostly use new wood and everything is clean and crisp.
Some of the easiest boxes to make can be made with the basic hand tools. Hand tool woodworking is the way to start. You don't have to buy loads of expensive machines that will hardly be used. Start small. Buy what you need.
Cardboard boxes can be great and useful. On the other hand look at vegetable boxes. Really flimsy side wood but the corners are strong so they can stack 10 high.
