How to use a Shooting Board - Then improve it to save sharpening as often.

I needed to use my shooting board last week with one of my students. She needed to get the mitres exactly right for an internal use. So out came the shooting board.

But, with a small Oak moulding it wasn't long before the iron needed sharpening. And that's when I did an upgrade to a shooting board - Blank inserts. To use a part of the blade that was still in perfect order.

Simple really, just a couple of offcuts that lift the piece off the surface. But there's a couple of things you should do.. Here's the link

Removing rust from my Japanese saw

Well another job that I had to do once I had realised that I'd left my saw in the shed over Winter. I never leave tools in my shed, due to damp and security.

What do you think of the thumbnail?

You have two options with this video, which I think is a great idea. You can watch and get to about four minutes for the basic method, then go through the rest for the more refined, better finish.

It means that the less patient people can walk away early and the ones who really want to do a proper job can fully watch and see the whole process.
